ARTIST RIKKE DARLING

Rikke Darling is a Danish visual artist with a studio and gallery in Østerbro, Copenhagen. For over 20 years, she has created original paintings, wall sculptures, and murals that hang in private homes, hospitals, businesses, and at the three-Michelin-starred restaurant Geranium in Copenhagen.

Her art moves within the intersection of biology, quantum physics, and abstraction — a visual narrative about nature in man and man in nature. Rikke Darling is a member of the international artist organization SciArt Initiative and the artist association K2.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My art is built on a deep belief in the power of abstraction — the complex and subtle, where something inarticulate within us meets an inspiring energy. Through a visual narrative of nature in man and man in nature, I wish to move the viewer with my worldview: that we humans are nature and part of a universal pattern where surroundings, senses, feelings, and thoughts merge on an energetic level.

Science Art — reduction as method

My art falls within the realm of Science Art (SciArt), where I investigate and express something about the world by reducing scientific and aesthetic concepts to fewer and simpler elements. I apply this reductionist approach to both form and color — I examine individual components to uncover more complex phenomena and seek to evoke a sensory and emotional realization in the viewer.

Laws of nature as an artistic tool

In my work, I utilize the flow of nature itself. Large amounts of water make forms fluid and alive. The laws of nature create movements and crackling. Branching shoots forth like new beginnings, following the universal pattern in a fractal budding — cells as the building blocks of nature and the foundation for all life.

The human body is in constant change from the first cell formation, where stem cells are the basis of our complex organism. It is this change and these patterns that I paint.

Fractal geometry and holistic worldview

I view the world holistically with a focus on the whole. Man and everything in the world are inextricably connected. The patterns of nature repeat themselves in a fractal geometry, where they are embedded in one another and repeated from the large to the small — applicable to nature's simplest organisms as well as the most complex, and thus also to us humans.

Energy, art, and realization

Quantum physics has taught us that everything we thought was physical is, in reality, energy. Everything in the universe consists of immaterial energy — and everything radiates energy. A work of art radiates energy. Colors radiate energy. Every sensation, emotion, and thought is an expression of energy.

With my art, I wish to contribute a sensory stimulus, an inspiring energy — and perhaps even new realizations.
