This August, I visited the Netherlands, where I painted murals for a wonderful family in a beautiful thatched-roof country house in Holland.
The hallways had white and light grey walls. The staircase featured a black floor, banister, and handrail, and the contrast with the light surfaces was a bit stark. They wanted to soften the area with a mural that brought nature indoors. The mural needed to be simple and serene. It shouldn't be dominant or noisy but poetic and understated.
The mural became botanical, with plants and flowers. A small robin and a butterfly also snuck into the painting. The family had beehives in their backyard, so small bees also made their way into the mural.
It turned into a calm and enchanting botanical mural that created atmosphere and surprising experiences with lots of small details as one ascended the stairs to the first floor.
