Looking for a large painting to hang above your sofa?
The living room is often the cornerstone of family gatherings. The sofa area should be a cozy, inviting oasis where the family can be together, or where one can simply relax after a long day's work. A painting above the sofa helps set the mood and colors.
When choosing a new painting, its size in relation to the furniture and wall space is very important. If you're unsure what size painting would best suit your sofa, here are a few tips to follow. Remember, these are just guidelines. If you feel something else works better above your sofa, then by all means, go for it.
Most people have a larger wall space behind the sofa, and many therefore choose to buy a large painting for this spot. The main artwork in the home is often placed above the sofa, so it's a good idea to put in a little extra effort when choosing this particular painting.
How large should a painting be above the sofa?
Many choose a large painting above the sofa. It looks best if the painting is centered above the sofa or aligns with a line, such as the edge of a sofa cushion. There should preferably be some space on each side of the painting, so the painting appears smaller than the sofa.
You can choose any format. It can be square, a painting that is mostly tall (vertical), or one that is mostly wide (horizontal). Paintings that are mostly wide are also called horizontal oblong paintings. These paintings are the easiest to place above a sofa, as their lines beautifully match the lines of the sofa. Something oblong above something oblong often looks harmonious.
I have three sizes of paintings that are perfect for above the sofa:
Paintings 110x180 cm – are paintings suitable for large sofas.
Paintings 100x150 cm suit medium sofas (here you can often also choose 110x180 cm paintings if you want a more dominant painting).
Paintings 70x130 cm suit small sofas, or if you have very low ceilings.(here you can often also choose 100x150 cm paintings if you want a more dominant painting).
If you have very specific dimensions, it's also possible to order a custom-painted piece.

How do you hang a painting above the sofa?
How high should a painting above the sofa be hung? It is generally said that if it's an area where you sit, such as a sofa, the painting should be placed so that you have a good view of it. The angle is different when you're sitting and looking at a painting compared to when you're standing. Therefore, a painting in a hallway should typically be hung higher than a painting above the sofa.
One might think the painting should be centered between the sofa's backrest and the ceiling, but a painting above a sofa should typically hang lower. Often, it looks best if the bottom edge of the painting is about 15-20 cm above the sofa's backrest. This is regardless of whether you have extra high ceilings, as you want the painting to feel connected to the sofa and surrounding furniture. You usually create a small oasis with the furniture, making it a sofa area, where, for example, a rug helps the coffee table and sofa merge better.
If the painting has a vertical wooden stretcher in the middle, you should use two screws in the wall when hanging the painting. Place a screw on each side of the stretcher, for example, 30-40 cm apart. This will make the painting hang flush with the wall. If you only use one screw, the top of the painting will tilt slightly away from the wall.
Art above the sofa
How far should the sofa be from the wall to allow space for a picture?
A large painting takes up space on the wall and can seem dominant when sitting on the sofa. Instead of moving the painting higher up on the wall, you can create more space around the painting by moving the sofa 10-20 centimeters away from the wall. This will often be enough to give a spacious feel. It might seem a bit strange, but it gives a sense of more space, and it's actually nice not to be sitting right up against a wall.
Regarding colors and expression, it's a matter of taste, and I believe the most important thing is to choose a painting that you love. Most people have a sofa in gray, blue, or beige shades, and most colors can work with that. It is the painting that creates life and atmosphere, so consider whether the painting should create light, or be darker-grounded for more coziness. Should the colors be dominant or more subdued?

Can you hang a square painting above a sofa?
Yes, you can certainly choose to hang a square painting above the sofa. However, it may not need to be centered above the sofa. For a square painting to be balanced, it might be a good idea to hang it so that it aligns with the edge of a cushion, for example. If there's a tall plant or lamp on one side of the sofa, it might be a good idea to move the painting slightly towards the opposite side to create balance.
It can also be a good idea to hang two square paintings side by side to create a more elongated look that harmonizes with the sofa's lines. A gallery wall with different formats by the same artist clustered together can also create an exciting look.
If you're unsure how you want to arrange the hanging, you are always welcome to contact me. I am happy to advise and offer creative ideas that can suit your living room.
