Mural in classic Copenhagen bathroom

Mural in a small Copenhagen bathroom

When art becomes part of the space

Small spaces present a particular challenge – they can easily feel cramped, impersonal or just lack that little extra that makes them come alive. That’s why it was an exciting task to create a mural in a classic, small Copenhagen bathroom in Nørrebro, where space doesn’t allow for hanging paintings, but where a mural could instead become an integrated part of the space.

The bathroom had a clean, timeless look with white walls and classic white tiles – an aesthetic that screams for contrast to avoid the room feeling clinical. To create a stronger frame around the painting, I chose to paint all the water pipes and one end wall black. This gave a nice graphic edge, which at the same time tied the elements together and allowed the upcoming mural to stand out clearly.

Abstract nature – Green shapes and orange bubbles

The painting itself is a play between the organic and the graphic. I was inspired by the growth of plants, the winding shapes and the natural flow often seen in botanical structures. The green shades move freely across the wall – in some places soft and undulating, in other places more pronounced and defined. To add life and energy to the otherwise calm play of colors, I placed bright orange bubbles around the composition. They act as little visual breathers and add a fresh contrast that gives the room personality and warmth.

When murals become part of the interior design

In a bathroom as small as this, the possibilities for decoration are limited. There is often no room for shelves, large plants or pictures on the walls, which is why murals are an ideal solution. They take up no physical space, but still change the atmosphere of the room significantly. Here, it became an artistic solution that creates depth, dynamism and a sense of movement – all in a room where one could otherwise easily feel a little confined by the small square meters.

One of the best things about this project was seeing how the painting transformed the bathroom from a neutral, somewhat anonymous bathroom into a place with character – a place where colors and shapes now play an active role in the experience of the space. When you step inside, your gaze is naturally drawn to the mural, and the green shapes and orange bubbles provide a sensory experience that changes depending on the light and angle you see it from.

For me, this project is a perfect example of how art can be integrated into everyday life – not as something hanging on a wall, but as part of the space itself. And in a small Copenhagen bathroom where every centimeter counts, a mural can be the perfect solution to create both depth, mood and personality.
